Be Prepared

Dates to Remember:

Sunday, April 9th Kickoff Fireside - 6:00pm for all Parents/Youth/Leaders attending trek

Mutual every Tuesday night!  Please try to have your son or daughter there. Most of the activities are designed to help prepare them for Pioneer trek.

Departure: Be at the church no later than 6:00am on Monday, July 24th. We will leave promptly at 6:30am.  Please get a good night's rest the night before.

Basic Trek Schedule:
Monday - travel to Martin's Cove. Start time 2pm, trek 3 miles to Cherry Creek campground.
Tuesday - trek to Martin's Cove 7 miles
Wednesday  - trek Sixth Crossing 6 miles
Thursday - trek Rocky Ridge 14 miles
Friday - Depart for home

Be physically prepared!
Pioneer treks require physical stamina, which you can develop by obeying the Word of Wisdom, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly.  Physical preparation cannot be completed in a short period of time. Be prepared to walk 3 miles an hour and be capable of walking up to 15 miles a day while pulling a handcart over rough terrain.  Slowly build up your endurance to avoid injury. Do not buy new shoes right before trek.  At the latest give yourself a month to break in your shoes.  Trek is not a fun place to get blisters.  Athletic, cross train or running shoes are recommended. (No Keds or Converse shoes.)

Be Wise
Learn all you can about trek. Visit the church's pioneer trek page on lds.org for a variety of other trek information.

Watch "Sweetwater Rescue" to learn the history of the Martin & Willie Handcart Companies.  It is an informative 45 minute documentary.

Find your Pioneer Ancestors
Each person on trek will be given a pioneer for whom they will trek.  We want the youth to research their own ancestry to find out if they have someone who crossed with the Willie, Martin, Hunt, or Hodgett companies or was part of the rescue party from Salt Lake.  If they do not have an ancestor in one of these groups they will be assigned one. Please let us know as soon as you can if you have an ancestor in one of these groups.  In addition, we want them to find a "pioneer" ancestor of their own. This "pioneer" could be the first person baptized in their family or have crossed the plains with another company or that inspires you in some way.  Learn their story by heart and be prepared to share it with your trek family. They only have to bring the extra pioneer story if they did not  already have an ancestor in the Willie/Martin/Hunt/Hodgett/rescuers group. It is encouraged that they bring the extra ancestor story for their own benefit but it is not required if they are already trekking for a pioneer ancestor in the Willie/Martin/Hunt/Hodgett/rescuers group.   For help on finding your ancestors go to the Finding Pioneers Page.
